A Life Less Stressed: Why I wrote the book and what it’s about

My new book ‘A Life Less Stressed’ represents a significant point in my life, both professionally and personally. After almost 40 years in private practice as a dentist, I have a unique opportunity to regularly observe how my patients’ oral and general health progresses over many years. Many I have known for decades and watched through the many stages of life. In a sense, the book is the continuation of a conversation I wish I could have with every patient.

The book is about understanding what ‘holistic’ means. It’s about understanding what ‘stresses’ impact us on a daily basis in our modern world. It highlights the role of the food and pharmaceutical industries in all levels of healthcare. The latter is a story that’s easy to miss but difficult to ignore. It has made me realise that the best alternative is to take control of your own health.

In 2015, I got a diagnosis of prostate cancer on my 60th birthday. My father had it when he was 60, as did my uncle and my brother all at the same age. While writing this book and identifying the challenges we all face, receiving a diagnosis of cancer hardly came as a surprise although I was certainly disappointed.  I wish I could say ‘A Life Less Stressed’ was autobiographical; its’ not, but certainly aspirational even more so after my diagnosis.

Importantly, I describe the book as ‘an exploration’. I cover a wide range of topics. The more I learn the more I realise there is to learn. Rather than feel overwhelmed I actually feel empowered, and I hope that will be the effect on those that read the book. The book is ‘a line in the sand’ from which to understand and think about what ‘holistic’ actually means, understand ‘stress’ in our modern world.

While the problems and challenges we face in our modern world become more complex, the solutions are actually remarkably simple.

The main point of the book is to convert confusion to clarity and information to knowledge, to empower people to take control of their own health, build physical, mental and emotional resilience to deal with a life less stressed and to simply be well.

It’s for these reasons that I’ve created, with the help of my team, a number of health programs and health solutions that explore the 5 pillars of health. Through simple, evidence-based health advice, you will be able to improve your health and be the best you can be.
